As if Sylvia wasn't reward enough...

Each year for our anniversary my Mom, bless her heart and wallet, insists on sending us a card and a check. On the check she always writes a number which is much larger than necessary to celebrate a marriage I wouldn't trade for the world anyway. In the card she always writes, "This is for something you WANT, not something you NEED." As my faithful readers both know, boardgames straddle that line for me. But in the interest of adding to my collection I decided they fell on the WANT side. So The Spousal Unit and I picked out a few and ordered them from our favorite on-line reseller Housefullofgames.com. Here they are with their boardgamegeek links. I can't write much about them since I've only played one of them:

Thurn & Taxis: This game won the coveted Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) this year. It has the rather unexciting theme of building postal networks throughout Germany and its neighboring provinces. Woo-hoo. But I watched a video review at Boardgameswithscott.com and the game looks like a lot of fun. If you aren't familiar with Eurogames check out boardgameswithscott and watch his reviews of Thurn and Taxis and...

Santiago and you'll get a pretty good idea of what some of the "light to medium weight" games are like. I don't have anything to say about Santiago except that Scott's video review and a few other written reviews were enough to make me want it. Bad. Check out Scott's reviews of other games as well and there's surely one that'll interest you no matter how deep of a game you prefer. Unless, of course, your favorite game is Life or Monopoly. Then just go to Toys-R-Us and grab any old thing.

No Thanks!: I made a homemade version of this a while ago before the English reprint came out and it works fine but the cardstock cards I made are hard to shuffle and the ink is quickly fading and it was $7 so there you go.

Attika: This game is now out of print but housefullofgames had one or two left so we snagged one before they're all gone. The game sounds like it'll be right up our alley and, while it's playable by 2-4 players, it's supposed to be best with 2 and Sylvia and I are always on the lookout for good 2 player games.

Carcassonne: The City: We've been big fans of Carcassonne and a few of its expansions for a long time. They're the games that got us into the whole Eurogame thing. The City is not an expansion but a whole new game based on the Carcassonne theme and style of play. It's supposed to be a bit more strategic than the orginal, plays well with 2-4 players and is thought by many to be even better than its predecessor. I'll let you know.

We also bought a gift for Daddy (The Spousal Unit's father) but I can't say what it is because he reads my blog sometimes. I only mention it because it'll drive him nuts wondering what we got him. That and I don't have a good story today about fucking his daughter. Those are his favorite.

So there you have it. I'll let you know what we think of them as we give them a whirl. Further bulletins as events warrant.

I'd have gotten married when I was like 6 if I knew then what I know now. Live and learn.
